Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary is located 1.2 miles from the Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast, was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world. Built in 1829 the prison still as a historic ruin of a bygone era.

Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.

Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America's most notorious criminals, including bank robber "Slick Willie" Sutton and Al Capone.

By the 1960's, the aged prison was in need of costly repairs. The Commonwealth closed the facility in 1971, 142 years after it admitted Charles Williams, Prisoner Number One.
