Did she or didn’t she? While historians debate Betsy Ross’ role in making the first American flag, the home of the nation’s best known seamstress is among the region’s most popular attractions. Betsy, who made a living as a furniture upholsterer, rented the 1740 home, and the teeny-tiny rooms and tight little staircases give a good portrayal of a working class woman’s life in colonial America. Her workroom, two bedrooms, and kitchen are all included in a self-guided tour. An exhibit area in the house’s extensive gift shop displays family treasures including her family bible, snuff box, and other artifacts while a new audio tour allows visitors to take a guided tour of the house at their own pace. Betsy Ross is buried beneath the giant elm and sycamore trees that shade the courtyard.

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone.

The Franklin Institute (named after the noted American scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin) is a museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and one of the oldest centers of science education and development in the United States, dating to 1824. The Institute also houses the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial.

The ICA has led the way with the first-ever museum shows of Warhol, Laurie Anderson, Agnes Martin, Robert Indiana and other influential artists. The wide-open spaces and ultra-high ceilings of its building on the Penn campus, opened in 1990, allow plenty of room for artists to let loose with multimedia installations that climb, hang or scatter through the galleries. Recent shows have looked at fashion icon Rudi Gernreich, bad-girl painter Lisa Yuskavage, and the young collaborative group Space 1026.

During the last 120-plus years, the Penn Museum sponsored more than 400 worldwide scientific expeditions, which yielded many of the artifacts here, including Sumerian cuneiform clay tablets (some of the world’s oldest writing), architectural elements from the 3,200-year-old palace of the pharaoh Merenptah, a traditional Hopi bridal outfit from the American southwest, and the Queen Puabi’s jewelry, 4,500 years old, from the Royal Cemetery at Ur (in modern-day Iraq). Classical Greek and Italian treasures are presented in a suite of galleries, “Worlds Intertwined: Etruscans, Greeks and Romans.” Other noteworthy galleries explore ancient Egypt and Egyptian mummies, Canaan and Ancient Israel, Africa, Asia, Buddhism and the American Southwest, and are supplemented with special changing exhibitions.

The Mütter Museum is a riveting storehouse for the anatomically strange. The Museum’s display of 20,000 provocative items is designed to give a beneath-the-surface perspective of what physicians study. Inside the Museum, you’ll find a wide smattering of abnormal body parts preserved in fluid. You’ll encounter skeletal formations — like that of a 7’6” man — that don’t seem quite possible. Diseased and enlarged organs are tastefully displayed within glass-encased oak frames. For the sake of comparison, illustrations of normal anatomical formations are cast in wax, plaster and papier mâché throughout the museum. Connections to the famous include Marie Curie’s electrometer, Dr. Benjamin Rush’s medicine chest and, most spectacularly, the death cast of Chang and Eng, the original “Siamese Twins,” whose autopsy was performed in the museum
